Pollensa, natural setting and beaches
Pollensa natural setting and beaches
Pollensa countryside is made up of rock formations that rise up out of the sea, whole woods that seems to lean into its waters, long beaches of white sand, charming secluded coves, fascinating paths to explore, numerous protected natural areas like S`albufera, and abundant examples of native flora and fauna.
All this is set within the framework of the wide variety of ecosystems found in the Serra de Tramuntana, a mountain range whose highest peak, Puig Tomir with 1.103 metres, rises up close to Pollensa. Declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO in 2011, Serra de Tramuntana stands out for its invaluable cultural landscape.
Some twenty beaches and coves make up the coast of Pollensa, and their tranquil waters are home to a valuable natural treasure, the Neptune grass.
According to scientific research, an area equivalent to hectare of this species of seagrass, is capable of converting the same of CO2 into oxygen, as five hectares of vegetation in the Amazon rainforest.
As well as providing a great richness to the marine ecosystem of the Balearics, la Neptune grass acts as a natural break to waves, reducing erosion of the municipality´s beaches.
